2nd International Conference on Tourism
and Climate Change
Davos, Switzerland, 1-3 October 2007
The 2nd International Conference on Climate Change
and Tourism will bring together international organizations, governments,
public and private sector stakeholders in tourism and the academic
community in order to review international processes and to discuss
adaptation and mitigation needs and policy options. The event
will examine the linkages between climate factors and tourism
operations in their complexity, to draw conclusions and propose
recommendations to all stakeholders involved. It is aimed at continuing
and deepening the debate started in Djerba 2003, in the light
of recent developments in the field, as well as benefiting from
the latest report of the IPCC and the ongoing UNWTO-UNEP study
on climate change and tourism.
The options open to the tourism sector for adaptation
to climate changes will be discussed from a destination's perspective
in three panel sessions: coastal destinations and small islands,
mountain regions, and heritage sites.
Possibilities for mitigation will be discussed
in three panel sessions: mitigation in the transport sector, mitigation
in hotels and other tourism establishments, and mitigation of
tourism's impact on the natural environment and strengthening
the resilience of ecosystems.
The results of the conference will lead to the
Davos Declaration, to be submitted to the Tourism Ministerial
Summit on Climate Change, to be held in London, United Kingdom,
on 13 November 2007, and to the UNWTO General Assembly (Cartagena
de Indias, Colombia, November 2007).
